Cult classic?
[edit]We read in the lead that "In the years since its release, the film has become a cult classic."
Wikipedia defines the term: "Inclusive definitions allow for major studio productions, especially box-office bombs, while exclusive definitions focus more on obscure, transgressive films shunned by the mainstream."
Eternal Sunshine was a critical and commercial success; per Wikipedia "The film was a box office success, grossing $74 million on a $20 million budget, and was named by the American Film Institute one of the Top 10 Films of 2004. At the 77th Academy Awards, Bismuth, Gondry and Kaufman won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and Winslet received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress." So it was not a box office bomb, nor was it shunned by the mainstream, nor is it transgressive. So I'm not sure the label fits. Charlie Faust (talk) 16:59, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- "cult classic" is one of those terms that gets thrown around too loosely, and we'd need multiple sources to use this term before it was worth mentioning in the lead. I've removed it for now. The "named one of the best films of the 21st century" accolades seems more salient. Popcornfud (talk) 17:36, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
